Theatre Engineering

Our long association with the world of theatres and theatre management groups began in 1991. We have a comprehensive and experienced knowledge of all areas of design and refurbishment associated with theatres.

The expertise of the practice in this sphere extends from backstage and scenery design to the design of new theatres operating in conjunction with specialist architectural practices.

Our first complex commission was to carry out a full structural assessment of the Drum Revolve at the Royal National Theatre. The stage had a long history of problems and over a six-month period we examined every aspect of the stage and were able to identify the cause of the problem and our remedial solutions were adopted. Our success resulted in Richter being retained as consultant structural engineers for the Royal National Theatre.

Our wide experience of design and construction enables us to assist our clients in selecting the most appropriate solution for a given problem.

The Royal National was one of our first major projects and we have subsequently been involved with many prestigious theatres both in this country and abroad. Our projects have included work at Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, Dominion Theatre in London, The Alhambra in Dunfermline and in India at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Mumbai.

Through our extensive experience over many years, we are in the enviable position to have a special understanding not only in the workings of the theatre but the needs of those working in them. We are able to create innovative design solutions which are sympathetic to the practical and particular needs of the theatre and theatre companies.
